Most (but not all) pet dogs really love and enjoy being stroked and petted. This is just the way they are.
It stems partly from their ancient wolf ancestors and partly from how humans have bred them over thousands of years.
Luckily most dog owners also love petting their dogs.
So it is a win-win situation and one of the best things about owning a dog.
